Fasting Guide


Fasting is a spiritual discipline used for increasing faith, sanctification, repentance, power, strength and hearing from God. (Esther 4:16; Isaiah 58; Joel 1:14; Acts 13:2 & 3; Acts 14:23)


Types of Fasting

There are at least two known fasts in the Bible.


1. The Absolute Fast (Matthew 4:2)

This is a total fast, which includes complete refraining from food or drink for the duration of the fast. There will be periods of time when you can do absolute during the month of January


2. The Partial Fast (Daniel 10:3)

This fast is from particular food or things that hinder our spiritual growth.


3. The Daniel Fast

This is a biblically based partial fast. There are two anchoring scriptures for the Daniel Fast. In Daniel 1 the Prophet ate only vegetables (that would have included fruits) and drank only water. So from these scriptures we get two of the guidelines for the fast


NOTE: Fasting is not a diet or weight reduction plan. Consult your physician before you fast if you are any medications or required to eat for other health reasons (diabetics, etc).

How to Prepare for the Daniel Fast

Quiet Time: If you don't already have an established daily quiet time with the Lord, then this is an excellent opportunity to do so. Starting your day with God is a habit that will support your faith and growing intimacy with

the Lord. During your Fast, be sure to set a daily time to come before the Lord, to study His Word and His ways.


How to Begin Spiritually:

Start with a clear personal goal in addition to our corporate goals. Be specific. Why are you fasting? Do you need direction, healing, restoration of marriage or family issues? Are you facing financial difficulties? Ask the Holy

Spirit for guidance. Pray daily and read the Bible. Prepare spiritually by confessing your sins to God. Ask the Holy

Spirit to reveal areas of weakness. Forgive all who have offended you and ask forgiveness from those you may

have offended (Mark 11:25; Luke 11:4; 17:3-4).

Surrender your life fully to Jesus Christ and reject the worldly desires that try to hinder you (Romans 12:1-2).

What to Expect during the Fast:

When you fast your body detoxifies, eliminating toxins from your system. This can cause mild discomfort such as headaches and irritability during withdrawal from caffeine and sugars. And naturally, you will have hunger pains.

Limit your activity and exercise moderately. Take time to rest. Fasting brings about miraculous results. Spend time listening to praise and worship music. Pray as often as you can throughout the day. Get away from the normal

distractions as much as possible and keep your heart and mind set on seeking God's face.

Remember that it is the attitude of a heart sincerely seeking Him to which God responds with a blessing. Whether

you choose option 1 or 2, make it sacrificial for you. This fast is not about rules of eating this or that—it is about

GOING DEEPER—just fasting for the purpose of drawing closer to God. May God greatly bless you as you

fast!




Introduction/Overview


Twenty twenty-three is the year of “Going Deeper”. We all want more from God and the road map to more from God is having an insatiable appetite for more of God. God said if you seek him, you will find him. Jeremiah 29:13


God said draw near to him and he will draw near to you.

James 4:8 Jesus said if you hunger and thirst after

righteousness you will be satisfied. Matt 5:6 Jesus said

he was a well of living water. John 4:10 The Psalmist said

deep calleth into deep. Psalm 42:7 Given all that, then

could it be the only reason you’re not Going Deeper is

you think what God has for you will simply fall into your

lap with no effort. No! Certainly, you don’t think that,

but many do. Name one healthy relationship that one

person gives it their all and the other does little to

nothing.


So it is in your walk with God in 2023. You are going to put in the work to get what you want

from God. You have drank all the milky word you can take. It is time to take the diaper and depends off and go after everything you want from God. Hebrews 5:12-14 12Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to reteach you the basic principles of God’s word. You need milk, not solid food! 13For everyone who lives on milk is still an infant, inexperienced in the message of righteousness. 14But solid food is for the mature, who

by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil. Jesus put it this way in Luke 5: 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”


Surface living will only get you so far in life. Deep dives is where the essence of life is found.

It’s not until you really get to know someone that the full volume flower and richness of the relationship provides the fruit that is needed to develop it for the challenges and celebration it encounters. Our

relationship with God is similar. So, let’s start the year off with Going Deeper in every area but the area of our walk with God – in particular.


This devotional will take you deeper in studying/living the word, praise/worshipping God, and learning about the Holy Spirit, praying and being generous. First studying and living the word. You can’t live what you don’t know. Challenge yourself to memorize the scripture this year. Did you know scholars say we are the most scripture illiterate generation. It’s hard to live what you don’t know. Once you know it you will live it. Psalm 119: 11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Second, now you can give the God you know all your praise, worship, and lifestyle. Just like in a relationship, it’s far easier to praise someone you know intimately than a stranger whom you just met. Third, to enhance your relationship with God you must Go Deeper in your communication with God.

Prayer is simply communication. From baby talk, to speaking in tongues, to having a prayer language. It’s all communication and God wants to have intimate pillow talk with you. This year deeper conversations with God is on deck. Finally, a generous heart comes from a deep relationship. Going deeper will empower you to be more generous than you have ever been. You will discover how to unlock the more abundant life for you and yours when you Go Deeper in applying the principles of providential living.


There you have it! You ready to go? Well, let’s Go Deeper in 2023.





Week One – January 1 - 7


Word


Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Luke 21:33

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it

penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the
thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Heb. 4:12

When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was

God. John 1:1

For when he spoke, the world began! It appeared at his command.

Psalm 33:9 NLT


The bible is full of references to the power, purpose and being of the word. It

is for that reason we should study the word. The word is a lamp unto our feet. The

Psalmist said it was good that he was afflicted so he would learn the word. This

week is all about you learning and living the word. The word of God is your

measuring stick. As a carpenter has a plumbline to ensure what he/she is building

is balanced and true, so should we use God’s word to ensure we are living a true life

of godliness.


When I gave my life to Christ, I marveled at believers who would quote

chapter and verse of the bible. I decided I wanted to be able to pull scriptures out of

my heart, so I started walking around with a scripture in my pocket and pulling it out

periodically during the day reciting it to myself. I regret I didn’t continue that

practice. While I can quote some scripture, I wish I could quote more. This week

let’s return to that discipline and memorize a verse a week. Write it on a piece of

paper or index card. Pull it out at least five times a day. Read the address (chapter

and verse) quote the scripture then read the address again. If it has a pronoun or

proper name in it, when appropriate, put your name in it when you quote. This year

let’s lift the power of God’s word to living status. You live it when you learn it.

Point to Ponder: God began everything with a word. His word is the formulation of

God’s thoughts, action and nature. To know God’s word is to know God.

Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to begin this consecration with learning, living

and memorizing your word.

Today’s Truth: For when he spoke, the world began! It appeared at his

Point to Ponder: The Psalmist recalls the very power of God’s word to activate life.

Tuesday, January 3rd

Today’s Truth: When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my

heart’s delight, for I bear your name, LORD God Almighty. Jeremiah 15:16


Point to Ponder: Jeremiah likens God’s word to a meal for a hungry person. He is

in fact in desperate need for God’s word given his plight.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to dine on your word to satisfy my situation.

Thursday, January 5th

Today’s Truth: Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass

Point to Ponder: Luke makes the point of the durability of God’s word. He repeats

Jesus’ words back to us which is actually Jesus quoting the prophets. Nothing can

outlast God’s word – nothing!


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to live the word so I can outlast whatever is

trying to take me out.

Friday, January 6th

Today’s Truth: Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it

shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall

succeed in the thing for which I sent it.


Point to Ponder: Isaiah reminds us of the resuscitation of God word. Isaiah’s

words are a commentary on Genesis 1 when God started everything with the word.

Since the word started everything, when we live it, it cannot return void, but will be

fruitful like the Garden of Eden was when God first spoke the word.

Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to know even if it has to resuscitate the word, it

will not come back void.

Saturday, January 7th

Today’s Truth: Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean

on your own understanding.


Point to Ponder: The proverbial writer reminds us of the finality and futility of our

knowledge when it is not coupled with applying God’s word. Trust God’s word not

our word.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to apply your word to my knowledge so I can

have wisdom and understanding.

Context: Isaiah reemphasizes the viability of God’s word. God’s word is so

dependable you can rely on it to do what it says.

Week Two: January 8th – 14th


Praise/Worship & Life in the Spirit

Psalm 150:1-6 Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his

mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his

excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp!

Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him
with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! ...

The often-quoted scripture Psalm 150:6 Let everything that has breath praise

the Lord, we say it so much, but do we really know what the Psalmist is saying?


Let’s Go Deeper.

It all begins in the beginning in Genesis when God breathed life into humanity.

Ever since then humanity has not stopped breathing. It is the same breath – ruhaw

that brought life to the dry bones in the Valley of Dry Bones - pneuma that filled the

upper room in Acts 2: 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came

from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. The Spirit of God is

the breath of God which brings life to our souls. Breath and life are synonymous.

That is why we say when a person expires, we literally mean they took their last

breath. Like a tire that goes flat or balloon that is popped. That is why we say they

must be put on a respirator to resuscitate them in order to breathe. All this simply

means getting them to breathe again. Now! What does all of that have to do with

you praising and worshipping God?

Because you have breath in your lungs that come directly from God the

function of breathing is praising God. Moreover, breathing people means they are

living and one Hebrew meaning of worship is serving. So, praise and worship

literally means my life of service is an act of praise and worship. You see we make

Psalm 150:6 to be a corporate demonstrative act alone. Going Deeper in praise and

worship is a lifestyle. Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in

view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to

God—this is your true and proper worship. This year is all about a deeper level of

praise and worship. Each day this week live out your praise and worship and

Sunday corporate becomes the “turn-up” moment of celebrating you are still alive!

Point to Ponder: Paul is encouraging believers to live a lifestyle of worship by being

spirit filled even in the songs they sing.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to have a lifestyle of worship.

Monday, January 9th

Today’s Truth: John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in

spirit and truth.”


Point to Ponder: Jesus is making it clear – the posture of worship is living a life of

truth.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to worship with the fruit of my life and not just the

fruit of my lips.

Tuesday, January 10TH

sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name

Point to Ponder: The writer of Hebrews is establishing a spirit filled life is a lifestyle

that are the words in our mouths.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to praise and worship you with my whole life.

Make it such a habit for me that I don’t even see it as a sacrifice but a way of life that

comes naturally to me.

Point to Ponder: This commonly quoted scripture is more often than not used to

encourage people to have a demonstrative public expression of worship. We fail to

add to the interpretation that there is a private life of walking in the spirit that should

precede public worship.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to live in the spirit so I can worship you without

guilt in public.

Today’s Truth: Psalm 29:2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship

the LORD in the splendor of holiness


Point to Ponder: The glory of God is God’s reputation, persona, and power of His

presence in light. When we worship, we make his presence manifest.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to ascribe glory to God by my life and my

worship. Let my life be a reflection of your glory at all times!

Friday, January 13th

Today’s Truth: Psalm 107:22 And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell

of his deeds in songs of joy!


Point to Ponder: Worship is telling of the goodness of God. Sometimes it’s a song

and other times its an expression in a word, still other times it’s a living sacrifice of

praise of a life poured out for God.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to give you praise and live a life poured out for

you.

Saturday, January 14th

Today’s Truth: Acts 2”1-4 - When the day of Pentecost came, they were all

together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from

heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw tongues like

flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4And they were all

filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled

them.


Point to Ponder: Holy Spirit and worship go hand in hand. Notice Holy Spirit not

only gave them expressions of speaking in common language of the day, it also
made them witnesses. Holy Spirit is more than Sunday morning worship but

Monday morning living.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to be a spirit filled believer speaking in a

language that people can comprehend my witness.

Context: One of the mistakes we make with this text is we interpret it only to be a

worship experience and not a transformation. The Holy Spirit transforms us – it

does not just show up in a shout on Sunday morning.

Week Three: January 15th – 21st


Prayer


Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it,
and it will be yours. Mark 11:24


Going deeper in your prayer life is easier than you think. So often we think of prayer

as work, drudgery, difficult and discouraging. Why? We started in the wrong place.

We think of prayers that haven't been answered or we are lost for words. Let's look at prayer differently. Prayer is about relationship and communication.

Any and everyone you are in a relationship with, you communicate with. The

closer the relationship the more you have to say, and the lines of communication are

always open. The closer you are the more vulnerable you are with your

communication. So, it is with praying to God. If you struggle in your prayer life

perhaps it's because you are struggling in your relationship with God. Maybe all

not as tight as you think you are. Start talking more. It’s not hard. Speak in the

morning. Speak throughout the day as things come. Thank Him before your meals.

Your language need not be churchy, just genuine, and sincere.

Another reason we struggle is being at a loss for words. Well, maybe start

saying what you feel and stop searching for the right words. God is yearning to hear

from you not someone you think should sound a certain way. Just repeat his word

back to him pray the word.

Still another reason you struggle is you didn't get the answer you wanted or

no answer at all. God is polite and considerate - it's only polite to respond when

someone speaks to you. God isn't like the stuck-up so-called friend that only calls

when they want something. God answers your prayers. 7 “Ask and it will be given to

you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For

everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks,

the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8

Now that that's out of the way let's go deeper in prayer. Let's learn how to

have a prayer language. For more read my book on prayer “Prayer Answers

Guaranteed”. Excerpt on prayer language:


One cold December night my mother called me into her room and told

me we had to pray for one of my brothers. I was no more than thirteen at the

time. I had given my life to Christ at age 12 and started preaching the next

year. My brother was in his early twenties. My immediate thought was how

could I pray for my brother. I remember thinking I was too young and why

was my mother including me in this prayer? She had never done that before.

When she told me what we were going to pray about, I became even more

afraid and began to feel completely powerless. My brother had a heroin habit

that was fast becoming an addiction. He worked in Washington, DC, and was

late returning to work from the holidays. He told my mother he needed bus

money. At that time, the Greyhound was the main mode of travel between

Goldsboro, NC and Washington, DC. He also told my mother he feared when

he got back, he would lose his job. He was desperate. My mother, as usual,

seemed to think prayer could solve everything. I wasn’t so sure, since I had

seen my brother, through the crack in the bathroom door, shoot heroin into his

veins a few months earlier and there was no sign he had stopped. My mother

was not discouraged. She said, “Son, lay your hands on your brother. We are

going to pray.” She got some consecrated olive oil and anointed my brother’s

forehead. She began to pray. I tried to pray. My mother prayed like I’d never

heard her pray before. My brother began to jump and shout in my parents’

small bedroom. My mother began to speak in tongues and so did my brother.

I was quiet and frightened. I had never heard my mother speak in tongues

(pray in her prayer language). I had never seen my brother act like that

before. Growing up in a holiness church I’d heard about people speaking in

tongues and praying in a prayer language, but I had never witnessed it. We

went to church on Sundays from sunup to well into the night. We had to go to

revivals. But in all my church going, I had never heard anyone speaking in

tongues. Now I was hearing it for the very first time. My brother eventually

stopped and so did my mother. He left. He caught the bus. He kept his job.

Today, after a lot of ups and downs in life, Larry is a powerful preacher.

That experience convinced me of the authenticity of praying in

the spirit or what is commonly called praying in a prayer language. It is

important for you to know there is a difference in speaking in tongues and

praying in tongues, or what is also called praying in your prayer language.

Praying in tongues is direct communication to God. It is communication

encrypted and deciphered by the Holy Spirit for the express purpose of

sharing your innermost desires that cannot break through the interference

your flesh sometimes presents. This especially happens during stressful,

hopeless, and desperate times in your life. During these times if you start

praying and do not edit your words, more often than not your words, tears,

and expressions will turn into prayer language. Paul says it this way in

Romans 8: 26,27: In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We

do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us

with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts

knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in

accordance with God’s will. The Message Bible makes it even clearer. 26

Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right

alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t

matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless
sighs, our aching groans. 27 He knows us far better than we know ourselves,

knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God.


To understand praying in tongues, one must understand some basic facts.

a) Praying and speaking in tongues by any other name is still

communication.

b) It is communication that cannot find voice any other way, like

laughter and crying. Both are ways to communicate a reality that cannot be

communicated clearly other than the utterance of laughing or crying.

c) There are two schools of thought on tongues. One is it ended in

the church age when it served its purpose, and the other is it is a gift, like

other gifts, still in operation today. It is just like the gift of helps, hospitality

and other gifts found in Romans and Corinthians, which believers possess

and use today, so is tongues.

Paul refers to tongues in 1 Co. 12:28-30 and lists it as a gift. It is

impossible to single out one gift as fulfilling its requirements in the body of

Christ while others have not. Those who believe that do so out of blindly

holding onto their dogma and ignoring the phenomenon of individuals

experiencing supernatural communication with God. They also often, and I

believe wrongly, quote 1 Cor. 13:8, which says (KJV) 8Charity never faileth,

but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues,

they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. They fail

to read verse 10: But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in

part shall be done away. KJV

They fail to see when the text refers to tongues ceasing in the context

of referring to when Jesus returns and we are in heaven. At that point, there

will not be a need to communicate with God in that manner, because we will

be with him.

d) The express purpose of tongues is for communication to God

problems that naturally, due to emotions or other limitations, would not be

communicated by the person praying.

Remember the premise of prayer is to communicate to God, who wants

to be in relationship with you, and realizes answering you opens up the lines

of communication. For that reason, when you cannot pray as you should,

God intervenes spiritually to keep the lines of communication open. When

that happens, we speak in tongues. Paul even said he wished everyone

would speak in tongues.

• 1 Corinthians 14:5 : I would like every one of you to speak in

tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater

than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may

be edified.

If you do not speak in tongues or have a prayer language, remember it

is like any language. It is developed over time and practice. A baby starts

communicating with one-syllable words and increases with maturity. So it is

in your Christian walk. If you desire to speak in tongues and have a prayer

language, ask God for the gift. When you sense an unintelligible word coming

out of your mouth during a heart-wrenching prayer or praise, do not edit it or

stop it. It is natural to want to understand what you are about to say. That is

why it is supernatural when you speak in tongues, because it is inarticulate at

the moment you speak. The more you speak each word; your speech will

lead to another one. Sometimes God will tell you what you said. Other times

someone else may interpret your words. If there is no interpretation, then you

should pray in tongues at home, as it is for your own edification. This is

according to 1 Cor 14:27-28. If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be

by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. 28

But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him

speak to himself, and to God.

intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches

our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints

in accordance with God’s will.


Point to Ponder: Paul is saying when you have no words to express your needs

before God, his Holy Spirit turns your prayerful tears and inaudible words into an

intercession that God can understand.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to pray in the spirit. Give me a language you can

understand when I have no words of my own.

Point to Ponder: The Lord’s prayer is an expression of an example of prayer.

Jesus said it best, pray in this manner or pray using this outline.

will happen. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”


Point to Ponder: Jesus commands the disciples and us to use faith when we pray.

To pray and not believe is to see fig tree and mountain obstacles are too big for God

to move.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to believe what I pray and put our expectation on

God.

Today’s Truth: 1 John 5:14-15. And this is the confidence that we have toward

him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he

hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have

asked of him.

Point to Ponder: John is expressing the fact that our confidence in God’s word is

directly connected to our prayer life. In other words, if you are not living the word

then you are not confident that God’s word works. That lack of confidence will

become self-evident when you pray. How can you be confident God will keep his

word to answer your prayers if you are not confident enough in it to live it. No

confidence = no faith = no positive answer. Confidence = faith = prayers answered.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to live and pray your word with confidence.

Point to Ponder: The key to getting your prayers answered is the conditional

statement “if”. When his word abides in you then you pray his word and will for your

everything which is praying without ceasing.

Context: Paul is in prison when he writes this thank you letter to the church at

Philippi. He is an example of not being anxious about anything. He says prayer

breaks the hold anxiety has on most of us when we prayer – will God answer. Paul

says yes.

Week Four: January 22 nd – 28 th


Generosity


Philippians 4:19 ESV And my God will supply every need of yours according to

his riches in glory in Christ Jesus

This week it's all about you discovering how to be more generous. Generosity is a

way of life like praise, worship and breathing. Let's Go Deeper when it comes down

to generosity. Again, it begins in the beginning. When God gave mankind the earth,

he also gave clear instructions. Be fruitful and multiply. That command was in

response to what God gave. God gave the entire creation to us. Now! What does

that have to do with your generosity? We are simply responding to the first gift -

breath and the earth. Reciprocity, response, resuscitation are all acts of a live

human being living but also giving back. In other words, you are ___ is a gift from

God. Your response to the gift is you living for God by giving God your time, talent

and treasure. Then God gave us specific instructions on what to give. We are to be

generous with our time, talent, and treasure.

Time


Have you ever noticed how stingy people never have any time for you. They

are selfish with their time because they don’t want to feel vulnerable. They don’t

want the relationship to be that close that they have to give up the most valuable

thing that cannot be replaced – time. Once time is spent, it cannot be recovered.

When Jesus asked for some follower’s time, they all had excuses. Matthew 8:21-22

- 21 Another of His disciples requested, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

22But Jesus told him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” … God

saved you and he wants your irreplaceable commodity, and he will replace it with

eternity. Give him the time of your life and he will replace it with eternity with him.


Talent


God is so generous he gave everyone a talent. If you think your talents are

simply for you to make a lot of money, retire, and die, you’ve missed the point of

your life. God gave you talents to benefit others, not yourself. And God gave other

people talents that benefit you.

In the body of Christ, each part matters. There are no insignificant people in

the family of God. You are shaped to serve God, and he wants to see how you are

going to use the talents he gave you. Whether you’re a musician or an accountant, a

teacher or a cook, God gave you those abilities to serve others. The Bible tells us,

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully

administering God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10 NIV).

You are a manager of the gifts God has given to you. They may be great or

small in your eyes, but they matter to God. “It is required that those who have been

given a trust must prove faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2 NIV). When God created you, he

made an investment in you, and he expects a return on that investment. Are you

using what he’s given you for the benefit of others to make the world a better place?

Or are you just using those talents to benefit yourself?

If God has given you a talent, he wants you to use it. It’s like a muscle. If you

use it, it will grow. If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. If you have a talent but are afraid

to use it, or if you get lazy and don’t use it to benefit others, you’re going to lose it.

Like the parable of the ten talents in Luke 19, if you don’t use what God has given

you, he will take it away and give it to someone else who will. But if you use your

talents wisely, God will give you more. If you use your time wisely, God will give you

more time. If you use your energy wisely, God will give you more energy. If you use

your influence wisely, God will increase your influence. God will bless your level of

faithfulness. (adapted from Rick Warren)

Treasure


Now comes the tough part for many. Bishop how do I Go Deeper with giving

my treasure. I am convinced generosity is pervasive. The opposite is also true. If

you are stingy with your time and talent you will also be stingy with your treasure. If

you are generous in one area it will not stay behind the walls. Generosity will

breakthrough the walls of fear of being generous with your treasure.

You see generosity with your money has more to do with trust than you think.

We hold on to our money for fear we won't get any more to do with it what we want

to. It's indicative of how close or far you are to God. God told Israel he knew their

hearts had left him when he looked up and didn't see their tithe. Malachi 3:7 says

Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and

have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD Almighty.

“But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’ God said you are connected to me through

your heart. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21

God told Israel he loved them so much he gave them the opportunity to give.

Haggai 1:7-11 7This is what the LORD of Hosts says: Consider carefully your ways.

8Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house, so that I may take

pleasure in it and be glorified, says the LORD.9You expected much, but behold, it

amounted to little. And what you brought home, I blew away. Why? declares the

LORD of Hosts. Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with

his own house. 10Therefore, on account of you the heavens have withheld their dew

and the earth has withheld its crops. 11I have summoned a drought on the fields

and on the mountains, on the grain, new wine, and oil, and on whatever the ground

yields, on man and beast, and on all the labor of your hands.” God gave Israel the

freedom to spend their money the way they wanted. What they bought didn’t satisfy

them.


When we are given an opportunity to do what we want with what we have our

satisfaction never last long. What you have is a tool (money) to build the Kingdom

and a weapon to defeat the enemy. Your generosity with your treasure increases
your heavenly reward as well as builds the kingdom and defeats the enemy. But

store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not

destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal Matthew 6:20

chained to the Roman Praetorian guards. He had just received money on his books

and spoke with fervent faith. God supplied his needs and God will take care of ours.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to rely on you and not worry about my needs

being met.

Today’s Truth: Hebrews 13:16 ESV Do not neglect to do good and to share what

you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.


Point to Ponder: The writer of Hebrews told the church, which was under severe

persecution, still give sacrificially because it pleases God and he will meet their

needs.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to trust you even in difficult times and give.

Today’s Truth: Proverbs 11:24-25 ESV One gives freely yet grows all the richer;

another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings

blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.


Point to Ponder: The proverbial writer speaks the truth that whoever gives is

always a giver. They in fact will be watered with more. Whoever withholds will

suffer in their want.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to be a giver and not a taker.

Today’s Truth: Luke 6:38 For if you give, you will get! Your gift will return to you in

full and overflowing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for

more, and running over. Whatever measure you use to give—large or small—will be

used to measure what is given back to you.”


Point to Ponder: Luke is talking about the reciprocity and cyclical effect of giving. It

is with the same measure (amount) we give out is the same measure (amount) we

get back.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to use a big measuring cup in my generosity and

expect the same measure to come back my way.

Thursday, January 26 th

Today’s Truth: Malachi 3:10 ESV / Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that

there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of

hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a

blessing until there is no more need.


Point to Ponder: Malachi repeats what was started long before the law was

established. Since tithe was started before the law, like many commandments, e.g.

not to murder, steal, etc., it cannot be constrained by the law since it was included in

the law. In other words, by virtue of the fact it preceded the law and was right to do

by command of God, doesn’t make it wrong because Moses included in the law and

we are now under grace. There is a blessing when we tithe. God dares us – “test

me” – so he can prove he will bless you.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to trust you to pour out blessings on me as I

tithe.

Friday, January 27th

Today’s Truth: Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from

my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the

LORD Almighty. “But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’ Malachi 3:7

Point to Ponder: This text is directly connected to the previous. They go hand in

hand. This part of the text speaks to the love relationship between Israel and God.

The language of return speaks to being deserted. God says he has been deserted

because they stopped tithing. He knows they stopped loving because their treasure

(tithing) is found wherever their heart is.

Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to love you and never stop loving you by always

tithing to you to support your work in the earth.

Today’s Truth: 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 ESV The point is this: whoever sows sparingly

will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each
one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion,

for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in

all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9

As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their

righteousness endures forever.


Point to Ponder: Your ROI (return on investment) is up to you. Paul said if you give

a lot you can expect to receive a lot. Paul also said what you receive is not an in-

kind return. In other words, Paul said you will receive a reward of righteousness.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to sow with all my heart!

than enough time invested. They should be able to teach others by now, but instead

they are still spiritual infants. Why? Because they have been slow-moving and lazy

in their approach to the faith: "dull of hearing." Instead of teaching, they still need to

be taught, as if they were only new converts to the faith!


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me develop my level of intake of you. I want to

move on from milk to the steak of who you are!

Monday, January 30th

Today’s Truth: Hebrews 6:1-3 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of

Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead

works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of

hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And this we will do if God

permits.


Point to Ponder: Hebrews 6:1–3 is the author's answer to the problem posed at the

end of chapter 5. The readers are spiritually immature, and so there is a good

chance they will miss the deeper meanings which the book of Hebrews means to

explore. Here, however, the author resolves not to waste time on elementary

teachings. Instead, he will press on and allow the audience to "catch up" as they are able.

disciplines so I can serve you better, know you better and represent you better in the

Point to Ponder: Paul encourages the believers at the church at Ephesus to be

grounded and prayer is fundamental to being grounded. When you are, you won’t

be doing “the most” in your walk but you will be consistent.


Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to be grounded and consistent.

Philippians 4:8 8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble,

whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if
anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.


Context: In the midst of Paul’s imprisonment chains ankle to ankle to the elite

Roman Pretorian guards, Paul writes this thank you letter to the church at Philippi.

He gives them a glimpse into how he’s made it. He has kept his mind preoccupied

on good things not on what he is going through. Paul employs EQ emotional

quotient (managing one emotions) hundreds of years before it became popular.

Controlling your thoughts helps to control your emotions.

First Fruits History & Biblical Overview


The Historical Context of First Fruits:

 What is First Fruit? The significance of this holy day, like most other biblical

festivals, can be largely understood by its name.


  • First Fruits is one of the shelosh regalim, the three festivals for which every

Jewish male goes to Jerusalem if possible (Deuteronomy 16:16). First Fruits is

included in this exclusive list. It is prophetically significant in God’s plan for his

people.

  • God’s faithfulness in providing the early wheat harvest increases hopefulness for

an abundant fall harvest (Sukkot). Giving thanks for present provision leads to

faith for future addition. Lev. 2:12

  • The last day of the Unleavened Bread is the celebration of the First fruits (Yom

HaBikkurim), taking to the Temple the first fruit, the first born animal, the first

sheaf of barley.... it is symbolic of Jesus being the first of the First fruits

(1Cor.15:23)


 When is it given?

  • The feast of the first fruits were held consecutively on the fourteenth, fifteenth and

sixteenth days of the first month of the Jewish calendar.

 How is it given?

  • Lev. 23:9-10

Green Goddess Smoothie

INGREDIENTS

1 cup ice water 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (optional)

3/4 cup fresh spinach 1 celery stalk, roughly chopped

1 kiwi, peeled and sliced 1/2 green apple, cored, roughly chopped

1/2 green pear, cored, roughly chopped 8-10 ice cubes

1/2 cucumber, peeled and chopped 1/2 avocado meat


DIRECTIONS

In a high-speed blender, place all ingredients in the order they are listed. You want to make sure the spinach is weighted down by all the other ingredients to ensure everything gets mixed without chunks of spinach leaves. Blend on high speed for about 45-60 seconds and enjoy in a tall glass. You can divide into 2 glasses or save half for later. When you're ready to drink the remaining juice

(within 24 hours), throw in 6 ice cubes and re-blend.




Spicy Cabbage Soup

Ingredients:

1 medium onion, quartered and sliced thin 3 medium cloves garlic, chopped

1-2 tsp minced fresh chili pepper 2 tsp ground coriander

1 TBS dry mustard 5 cups + 1 TBS chicken or vegetable broth

2 TBS fresh lemon juice 2 medium-sized red potatoes cut 1/2 in. cubes

1 15 oz can diced tomatoes 3 cups thinly sliced Savoy or green cabbage

salt and black pepper to taste


Directions: Heat 1 TBS broth in a medium soup pot. Sauté sliced onion over medium heat for about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and minced chili pepper. Continue to saute for another minute. Stir in dried coriander and mustard. Add broth and the rest of ingredients except the cabbage, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 20 minutes, uncovered, or until potatoes are tender. Add cabbage, and cook for another 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.




Black Bean Chili

Ingredients:

1 medium onion, chopped 1 medium bell pepper, diced to 1/4-inch pieces

1 TBS + 1-1/2 cups vegetable broth 6 medium cloves garlic, chopped

4 cups or 2 15 oz cans black beans, drained 1 8 oz can tomato sauce

1 15 oz can diced tomatoes (do not drain) 2 TBS ground cumin

2 TBS red chili powder 2 TBS dried oregano

1 cup corn kernels, fresh or frozen 1/4 cup fresh chopped cilantro

Salt and black pepper to taste


Directions: Heat 1 TBS broth in a medium size soup pot. Sauté onion and bell pepper in broth over medium heat for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until translucent. Add garlic, cumin, and red chili powder and continue to sauté for another minute. Add 1-1/2 cups broth and the rest of ingredients, except for the cilantro and corn. Simmer for another 20 minutes uncovered. Add corn and cook for another 2 minutes. Add chopped cilantro and season with salt and pepper to taste.



Breakfast Recipes

Easy High-protein Breakfast Stir-fry for the Daniel Fast


1 tablespoon olive oil 1 medium onion, sliced

1/2 green pepper, chopped 1 cup firm tofu, diced in bite-sized pieces

Fresh Italian herbs to taste Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add oil and heat for a couple minutes. Add the onions and green peppers and stir fry for 2-3 minutes. Add tofu, garlic salt and Italian herbs. Continue to cook until vegetables are soft. Makes two servings.




Granola

4 cups rolled oats 1 cup crushed almonds

½ cup whole grain flour 1 tsp. cinnamon

¼ cup shredded coconut 1 cup sunflower seeds

½ cup wheat germ or other whole grain bran

1 cup honey 1 cup pumpkin seeds


Mix all together and spread out on a non-stick cookie sheet. Bake 20 min. in a 250 degree

preheated oven. Stir and continue to bake another 20 min., stirring periodically to prevent burning. The granola should be lightly browned. Remove from oven and serve warm or cool thoroughly and store in tightly sealed container or plastic bags. Option: After the granola is cooled, add raisins or other organic, unsulphured dehydrated fruit.


Quick Tomato Sauce

This is an easy recipe for homemade tomato sauce that you can use as a base for vegetable

casseroles, over 100% whole wheat pasta, or over brown rice.

2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium yellow onion (chopped)

2 cans diced tomatoes (14.5 oz) (or fresh) Salt to taste

1/4 cup cilantro, finely chopped

Saute onions in heated oil over medium heat, cooking until soft. Add tomatoes (including juice) and

salt. Simmer until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. Add cilantro and simmer for 5 or 10 more

minutes. Serve over pasta, rice or cooked vegetables.




Herb-Roasted Idaho Potato Fries

1-pound small baking potatoes 2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 tsp dried thyme 1/2 tsp dried rosemary

1/4 tsp salt

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Coat a heavy baking sheet with cooking spray. Cut each potato

in half crosswise. Place the halves cut side down on the cutting board and cut each into 4

wedges. Place the potatoes in a mound on the prepared baking sheet. In a cup, mix the oil,

thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper. Pour over the potato wedges and toss to mix well.

Spread the potatoes out on the sheet. Bake, stirring 2 or 3 times, until tender and lightly

browned, about 35 minutes. Serve hot.




Stir Fry Vegetables

1 red onion, sliced 3 stalks celery, thinly sliced

½ cup broccoli, chopped 1 bell pepper, sliced

1 tsp. sea salt 3 carrots, peeled and sliced

½ cup cauliflower, chopped 1 cup zucchini, thinly sliced



1 cup yellow squash, thinly sliced 1 Tbsp. Oriental seasoning

Stir-fry all vegetables in 1-2 Tbsp. olive oil until tender. Add salt and seasoning. Serve

alone or over brown rice.
