Fasting Guide
Fasting is a spiritual discipline used for increasing faith, sanctification, repentance, power, strength and hearing from God. (Esther 4:16; Isaiah 58; Joel 1:14; Acts 13:2 & 3; Acts 14:23)
Types of Fasting
There are at least two known fasts in the Bible.
1. The Absolute Fast (Matthew 4:2)
This is a total fast, which includes complete refraining from food or drink for the duration of the fast. There will be periods of time when you can do absolute during the month of January
2. The Partial Fast (Daniel 10:3)
This fast is from particular food or things that hinder our spiritual growth.
3. The Daniel Fast
This is a biblically based partial fast. There are two anchoring scriptures for the Daniel Fast. In Daniel 1 the Prophet ate only vegetables (that would have included fruits) and drank only water. So from these scriptures we get two of the guidelines for the fast
NOTE: Fasting is not a diet or weight reduction plan. Consult your physician before you fast if you are any medications or required to eat for other health reasons (diabetics, etc).
BISHOP DUDLEY AND NEW LIFE CHURCH ADVISE ALL LIFE CHANGERS TO CONSIDER THEIR
PERSONAL HEALTH NEEDS AND TO CONSULT WITH THEIR PERSONAL PHYSICIAN PRIOR TO
STARTING THIS OR ANY FAST.
How to Prepare for the Daniel Fast
Quiet Time: If you don't already have an established daily quiet time with the Lord, then this is an excellent opportunity to do so. Starting your day with God is a habit that will support your faith and growing intimacy with
the Lord. During your Fast, be sure to set a daily time to come before the Lord, to study His Word and His ways.
How to Begin Spiritually:
Start with a clear personal goal in addition to our corporate goals. Be specific. Why are you fasting? Do you need direction, healing, restoration of marriage or family issues? Are you facing financial difficulties? Ask the Holy
Spirit for guidance. Pray daily and read the Bible. Prepare spiritually by confessing your sins to God. Ask the Holy
Spirit to reveal areas of weakness. Forgive all who have offended you and ask forgiveness from those you may
have offended (Mark 11:25; Luke 11:4; 17:3-4).
Surrender your life fully to Jesus Christ and reject the worldly desires that try to hinder you (Romans 12:1-2).
Scripture References for Fasting:
Matthew 6:16-18, Matthew 9:14-15, Luke 18:9-14
Relation to Prayer and Reading of the Word: 1 Samuel 1:6-8, 17-18, Nehemiah 1:4, Daniel 9:3, 20, Joel 2:12, Luke
2:37, Acts 10:30, Acts 13:2
Corporate Fasting: 1 Samuel 7:5-6, Ezra 8:21-23, Nehemiah 9:1-3, Joel 2:15-16, Jonah 3:5-10, Acts 27:33-37
What to Expect during the Fast:
When you fast your body detoxifies, eliminating toxins from your system. This can cause mild discomfort such as headaches and irritability during withdrawal from caffeine and sugars. And naturally, you will have hunger pains.
Limit your activity and exercise moderately. Take time to rest. Fasting brings about miraculous results. Spend time listening to praise and worship music. Pray as often as you can throughout the day. Get away from the normal
distractions as much as possible and keep your heart and mind set on seeking God's face.
Remember that it is the attitude of a heart sincerely seeking Him to which God responds with a blessing. Whether
you choose option 1 or 2, make it sacrificial for you. This fast is not about rules of eating this or that—it is about
GOING DEEPER—just fasting for the purpose of drawing closer to God. May God greatly bless you as you
fast!
Introduction/Overview
Twenty twenty-three is the year of “Going Deeper”. We all want more from God and the road map to more from God is having an insatiable appetite for more of God. God said if you seek him, you will find him. Jeremiah 29:13
God said draw near to him and he will draw near to you.
James 4:8 Jesus said if you hunger and thirst after
righteousness you will be satisfied. Matt 5:6 Jesus said
he was a well of living water. John 4:10 The Psalmist said
deep calleth into deep. Psalm 42:7 Given all that, then
could it be the only reason you’re not Going Deeper is
you think what God has for you will simply fall into your
lap with no effort. No! Certainly, you don’t think that,
but many do. Name one healthy relationship that one
person gives it their all and the other does little to
nothing.
So it is in your walk with God in 2023. You are going to put in the work to get what you want
from God. You have drank all the milky word you can take. It is time to take the diaper and depends off and go after everything you want from God. Hebrews 5:12-14 12Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to reteach you the basic principles of God’s word. You need milk, not solid food! 13For everyone who lives on milk is still an infant, inexperienced in the message of righteousness. 14But solid food is for the mature, who
by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil. Jesus put it this way in Luke 5: 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
Surface living will only get you so far in life. Deep dives is where the essence of life is found.
It’s not until you really get to know someone that the full volume flower and richness of the relationship provides the fruit that is needed to develop it for the challenges and celebration it encounters. Our
relationship with God is similar. So, let’s start the year off with Going Deeper in every area but the area of our walk with God – in particular.
This devotional will take you deeper in studying/living the word, praise/worshipping God, and learning about the Holy Spirit, praying and being generous. First studying and living the word. You can’t live what you don’t know. Challenge yourself to memorize the scripture this year. Did you know scholars say we are the most scripture illiterate generation. It’s hard to live what you don’t know. Once you know it you will live it. Psalm 119: 11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Second, now you can give the God you know all your praise, worship, and lifestyle. Just like in a relationship, it’s far easier to praise someone you know intimately than a stranger whom you just met. Third, to enhance your relationship with God you must Go Deeper in your communication with God.
Prayer is simply communication. From baby talk, to speaking in tongues, to having a prayer language. It’s all communication and God wants to have intimate pillow talk with you. This year deeper conversations with God is on deck. Finally, a generous heart comes from a deep relationship. Going deeper will empower you to be more generous than you have ever been. You will discover how to unlock the more abundant life for you and yours when you Go Deeper in applying the principles of providential living.
There you have it! You ready to go? Well, let’s Go Deeper in 2023.
Week One – January 1 - 7
Word
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Luke 21:33
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it
penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the
thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Heb. 4:12
When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I
bear your name, LORD God Almighty. Jeremiah 15:16
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. John 1:1
For when he spoke, the world began! It appeared at his command.
Psalm 33:9 NLT
The bible is full of references to the power, purpose and being of the word. It
is for that reason we should study the word. The word is a lamp unto our feet. The
Psalmist said it was good that he was afflicted so he would learn the word. This
week is all about you learning and living the word. The word of God is your
measuring stick. As a carpenter has a plumbline to ensure what he/she is building
is balanced and true, so should we use God’s word to ensure we are living a true life
of godliness.
When I gave my life to Christ, I marveled at believers who would quote
chapter and verse of the bible. I decided I wanted to be able to pull scriptures out of
my heart, so I started walking around with a scripture in my pocket and pulling it out
periodically during the day reciting it to myself. I regret I didn’t continue that
practice. While I can quote some scripture, I wish I could quote more. This week
let’s return to that discipline and memorize a verse a week. Write it on a piece of
paper or index card. Pull it out at least five times a day. Read the address (chapter
and verse) quote the scripture then read the address again. If it has a pronoun or
proper name in it, when appropriate, put your name in it when you quote. This year
let’s lift the power of God’s word to living status. You live it when you learn it.

Sunday, January 1 st
Today’s Truth: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God. John 1:1
Point to Ponder: God began everything with a word. His word is the formulation of
God’s thoughts, action and nature. To know God’s word is to know God.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to begin this consecration with learning, living
and memorizing your word.
Going Deeper Note to Self:
Monday, January 2nd
Today’s Truth: For when he spoke, the world began! It appeared at his
command. Psalm 33:9 NLT
Point to Ponder: The Psalmist recalls the very power of God’s word to activate life.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to speak your word into the dead areas of my life.
Going Deeper Note to Self:
Tuesday, January 3rd
Today’s Truth: When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my
heart’s delight, for I bear your name, LORD God Almighty. Jeremiah 15:16
Point to Ponder: Jeremiah likens God’s word to a meal for a hungry person. He is
in fact in desperate need for God’s word given his plight.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to dine on your word to satisfy my situation.

Today’s Truth: For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-
edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it
judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Heb. 4:12
Point to Ponder: God’s word is not archaic not out of touch with our realities. The
writer of Hebrews makes the point God’s word is enlivened by the Holy Spirit and
empowers us to live.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to employ your word in every situation as it is
intrinsically woven into the very essence of who I am.
Going Deeper Note to Self:
Thursday, January 5th
Today’s Truth: Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass
away. Luke 21:33
Point to Ponder: Luke makes the point of the durability of God’s word. He repeats
Jesus’ words back to us which is actually Jesus quoting the prophets. Nothing can
outlast God’s word – nothing!
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to live the word so I can outlast whatever is
trying to take me out.
Going Deeper Note to Self:
Friday, January 6th
Today’s Truth: Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it
shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall
succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Point to Ponder: Isaiah reminds us of the resuscitation of God word. Isaiah’s
words are a commentary on Genesis 1 when God started everything with the word.
Since the word started everything, when we live it, it cannot return void, but will be
fruitful like the Garden of Eden was when God first spoke the word.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to know even if it has to resuscitate the word, it
will not come back void.
Going Deeper Note to Self:

Today’s Truth: Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean
on your own understanding.
Point to Ponder: The proverbial writer reminds us of the finality and futility of our
knowledge when it is not coupled with applying God’s word. Trust God’s word not
our word.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to apply your word to my knowledge so I can
have wisdom and understanding.

Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to
me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the
thing for which I sent it.
Context: Isaiah reemphasizes the viability of God’s word. God’s word is so
dependable you can rely on it to do what it says.
Deeper Notes:
1. What did you hear? What did God say to you as you read todays
scripture?
2. What do you think? How does it apply to your life?
3. What will you do? Don’t just be a hearer of his word, but a
doer/LifeChanger also.

Week Two: January 8th – 14th
Praise/Worship & Life in the Spirit
Psalm 150:1-6 Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his
mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his
excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp!
Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him
with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! ...
The often-quoted scripture Psalm 150:6 Let everything that has breath praise
the Lord, we say it so much, but do we really know what the Psalmist is saying?
Let’s Go Deeper.
It all begins in the beginning in Genesis when God breathed life into humanity.
Ever since then humanity has not stopped breathing. It is the same breath – ruhaw
that brought life to the dry bones in the Valley of Dry Bones - pneuma that filled the
upper room in Acts 2: 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came
from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. The Spirit of God is
the breath of God which brings life to our souls. Breath and life are synonymous.
That is why we say when a person expires, we literally mean they took their last
breath. Like a tire that goes flat or balloon that is popped. That is why we say they
must be put on a respirator to resuscitate them in order to breathe. All this simply
means getting them to breathe again. Now! What does all of that have to do with
you praising and worshipping God?
Because you have breath in your lungs that come directly from God the
function of breathing is praising God. Moreover, breathing people means they are
living and one Hebrew meaning of worship is serving. So, praise and worship
literally means my life of service is an act of praise and worship. You see we make
Psalm 150:6 to be a corporate demonstrative act alone. Going Deeper in praise and
worship is a lifestyle. Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in
view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to
God—this is your true and proper worship. This year is all about a deeper level of
praise and worship. Each day this week live out your praise and worship and
Sunday corporate becomes the “turn-up” moment of celebrating you are still alive!

Sunday, January 8th
Today’s Truth: Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching
and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual
songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Point to Ponder: Paul is encouraging believers to live a lifestyle of worship by being
spirit filled even in the songs they sing.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to have a lifestyle of worship.
Going Deeper Note to Self:
Monday, January 9th
Today’s Truth: John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in
spirit and truth.”
Point to Ponder: Jesus is making it clear – the posture of worship is living a life of
truth.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to worship with the fruit of my life and not just the
fruit of my lips.
Going Deeper Note to Self:

Join First Lady & me 4 an absolute day of fasting today. It is Water Only and
a No Media Day as well. See Appendix A at the end of guide for suggestions
on doing an absolute fast. Absolute fast will end tomorrow morning with our
Wednesday Prayer Call at 715am.
Today’s Truth: Hebrews 13:15 ESV Through him then let us continually offer up a
sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name
Point to Ponder: The writer of Hebrews is establishing a spirit filled life is a lifestyle
that are the words in our mouths.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to praise and worship you with my whole life.
Make it such a habit for me that I don’t even see it as a sacrifice but a way of life that
comes naturally to me.

Point to Ponder: This commonly quoted scripture is more often than not used to
encourage people to have a demonstrative public expression of worship. We fail to
add to the interpretation that there is a private life of walking in the spirit that should
precede public worship.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to live in the spirit so I can worship you without
guilt in public.

Today’s Truth: Psalm 29:2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship
the LORD in the splendor of holiness
Point to Ponder: The glory of God is God’s reputation, persona, and power of His
presence in light. When we worship, we make his presence manifest.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to ascribe glory to God by my life and my
worship. Let my life be a reflection of your glory at all times!
Going Deeper Note to Self:

Today’s Truth: Psalm 107:22 And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell
of his deeds in songs of joy!
Point to Ponder: Worship is telling of the goodness of God. Sometimes it’s a song
and other times its an expression in a word, still other times it’s a living sacrifice of
praise of a life poured out for God.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to give you praise and live a life poured out for
you.

Today’s Truth: Acts 2”1-4 - When the day of Pentecost came, they were all
together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from
heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw tongues like
flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4And they were all
filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled
them.
Point to Ponder: Holy Spirit and worship go hand in hand. Notice Holy Spirit not
only gave them expressions of speaking in common language of the day, it also
made them witnesses. Holy Spirit is more than Sunday morning worship but
Monday morning living.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to be a spirit filled believer speaking in a
language that people can comprehend my witness.

Context: One of the mistakes we make with this text is we interpret it only to be a
worship experience and not a transformation. The Holy Spirit transforms us – it
does not just show up in a shout on Sunday morning.

Week Three: January 15th – 21st
Prayer
Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it,
and it will be yours. Mark 11:24
Going deeper in your prayer life is easier than you think. So often we think of prayer
as work, drudgery, difficult and discouraging. Why? We started in the wrong place.
We think of prayers that haven't been answered or we are lost for words. Let's look at prayer differently. Prayer is about relationship and communication.
Any and everyone you are in a relationship with, you communicate with. The
closer the relationship the more you have to say, and the lines of communication are
always open. The closer you are the more vulnerable you are with your
communication. So, it is with praying to God. If you struggle in your prayer life
perhaps it's because you are struggling in your relationship with God. Maybe all
not as tight as you think you are. Start talking more. It’s not hard. Speak in the
morning. Speak throughout the day as things come. Thank Him before your meals.
Your language need not be churchy, just genuine, and sincere.
Another reason we struggle is being at a loss for words. Well, maybe start
saying what you feel and stop searching for the right words. God is yearning to hear
from you not someone you think should sound a certain way. Just repeat his word
back to him pray the word.
Still another reason you struggle is you didn't get the answer you wanted or
no answer at all. God is polite and considerate - it's only polite to respond when
someone speaks to you. God isn't like the stuck-up so-called friend that only calls
when they want something. God answers your prayers. 7 “Ask and it will be given to
you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For
everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks,
the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8
Now that that's out of the way let's go deeper in prayer. Let's learn how to
have a prayer language. For more read my book on prayer “Prayer Answers
Guaranteed”. Excerpt on prayer language:
One cold December night my mother called me into her room and told
me we had to pray for one of my brothers. I was no more than thirteen at the
time. I had given my life to Christ at age 12 and started preaching the next
year. My brother was in his early twenties. My immediate thought was how
could I pray for my brother. I remember thinking I was too young and why
was my mother including me in this prayer? She had never done that before.
When she told me what we were going to pray about, I became even more
afraid and began to feel completely powerless. My brother had a heroin habit
Page | 4
that was fast becoming an addiction. He worked in Washington, DC, and was
late returning to work from the holidays. He told my mother he needed bus
money. At that time, the Greyhound was the main mode of travel between
Goldsboro, NC and Washington, DC. He also told my mother he feared when
he got back, he would lose his job. He was desperate. My mother, as usual,
seemed to think prayer could solve everything. I wasn’t so sure, since I had
seen my brother, through the crack in the bathroom door, shoot heroin into his
veins a few months earlier and there was no sign he had stopped. My mother
was not discouraged. She said, “Son, lay your hands on your brother. We are
going to pray.” She got some consecrated olive oil and anointed my brother’s
forehead. She began to pray. I tried to pray. My mother prayed like I’d never
heard her pray before. My brother began to jump and shout in my parents’
small bedroom. My mother began to speak in tongues and so did my brother.
I was quiet and frightened. I had never heard my mother speak in tongues
(pray in her prayer language). I had never seen my brother act like that
before. Growing up in a holiness church I’d heard about people speaking in
tongues and praying in a prayer language, but I had never witnessed it. We
went to church on Sundays from sunup to well into the night. We had to go to
revivals. But in all my church going, I had never heard anyone speaking in
tongues. Now I was hearing it for the very first time. My brother eventually
stopped and so did my mother. He left. He caught the bus. He kept his job.
Today, after a lot of ups and downs in life, Larry is a powerful preacher.
That experience convinced me of the authenticity of praying in
the spirit or what is commonly called praying in a prayer language. It is
important for you to know there is a difference in speaking in tongues and
praying in tongues, or what is also called praying in your prayer language.
Praying in tongues is direct communication to God. It is communication
encrypted and deciphered by the Holy Spirit for the express purpose of
sharing your innermost desires that cannot break through the interference
your flesh sometimes presents. This especially happens during stressful,
hopeless, and desperate times in your life. During these times if you start
praying and do not edit your words, more often than not your words, tears,
and expressions will turn into prayer language. Paul says it this way in
Romans 8: 26,27: In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We
do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us
with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts
knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in
accordance with God’s will. The Message Bible makes it even clearer. 26
Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right
alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t
matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless
sighs, our aching groans. 27 He knows us far better than we know ourselves,
knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God.
To understand praying in tongues, one must understand some basic facts.
a) Praying and speaking in tongues by any other name is still
communication.
b) It is communication that cannot find voice any other way, like
laughter and crying. Both are ways to communicate a reality that cannot be
communicated clearly other than the utterance of laughing or crying.
c) There are two schools of thought on tongues. One is it ended in
the church age when it served its purpose, and the other is it is a gift, like
other gifts, still in operation today. It is just like the gift of helps, hospitality
and other gifts found in Romans and Corinthians, which believers possess
and use today, so is tongues.
Paul refers to tongues in 1 Co. 12:28-30 and lists it as a gift. It is
impossible to single out one gift as fulfilling its requirements in the body of
Christ while others have not. Those who believe that do so out of blindly
holding onto their dogma and ignoring the phenomenon of individuals
experiencing supernatural communication with God. They also often, and I
believe wrongly, quote 1 Cor. 13:8, which says (KJV) 8Charity never faileth,
but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues,
they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. They fail
to read verse 10: But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in
part shall be done away. KJV
They fail to see when the text refers to tongues ceasing in the context
of referring to when Jesus returns and we are in heaven. At that point, there
will not be a need to communicate with God in that manner, because we will
be with him.
d) The express purpose of tongues is for communication to God
problems that naturally, due to emotions or other limitations, would not be
communicated by the person praying.
Remember the premise of prayer is to communicate to God, who wants
to be in relationship with you, and realizes answering you opens up the lines
of communication. For that reason, when you cannot pray as you should,
God intervenes spiritually to keep the lines of communication open. When
that happens, we speak in tongues. Paul even said he wished everyone
would speak in tongues.
• 1 Corinthians 14:5 : I would like every one of you to speak in
tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater
than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may
be edified.
Page | 4
If you do not speak in tongues or have a prayer language, remember it
is like any language. It is developed over time and practice. A baby starts
communicating with one-syllable words and increases with maturity. So it is
in your Christian walk. If you desire to speak in tongues and have a prayer
language, ask God for the gift. When you sense an unintelligible word coming
out of your mouth during a heart-wrenching prayer or praise, do not edit it or
stop it. It is natural to want to understand what you are about to say. That is
why it is supernatural when you speak in tongues, because it is inarticulate at
the moment you speak. The more you speak each word; your speech will
lead to another one. Sometimes God will tell you what you said. Other times
someone else may interpret your words. If there is no interpretation, then you
should pray in tongues at home, as it is for your own edification. This is
according to 1 Cor 14:27-28. If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be
by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. 28
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him
speak to himself, and to God.

in accordance with God’s will.
Point to Ponder: Paul is saying when you have no words to express your needs
before God, his Holy Spirit turns your prayerful tears and inaudible words into an
intercession that God can understand.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to pray in the spirit. Give me a language you can
understand when I have no words of my own.

Today’s Truth: Matthew 6:9-13 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have
forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Point to Ponder: The Lord’s prayer is an expression of an example of prayer.
Jesus said it best, pray in this manner or pray using this outline.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to pray with authenticity.

Today’s Truth: Matthew 21:21-22 And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you,
if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig
tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it
will happen. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”
Point to Ponder: Jesus commands the disciples and us to use faith when we pray.
To pray and not believe is to see fig tree and mountain obstacles are too big for God
to move.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to believe what I pray and put our expectation on
God.

Today’s Truth: 1 John 5:14-15. And this is the confidence that we have toward
him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he
hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have
asked of him.
Point to Ponder: John is expressing the fact that our confidence in God’s word is
directly connected to our prayer life. In other words, if you are not living the word
then you are not confident that God’s word works. That lack of confidence will
become self-evident when you pray. How can you be confident God will keep his
word to answer your prayers if you are not confident enough in it to live it. No
confidence = no faith = no positive answer. Confidence = faith = prayers answered.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to live and pray your word with confidence.

Today’s Truth: John 15:7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask
whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

life.

to pray for others with the same fervor we pray for ourselves.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which
surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
Context: Paul is in prison when he writes this thank you letter to the church at
Philippi. He is an example of not being anxious about anything. He says prayer
breaks the hold anxiety has on most of us when we prayer – will God answer. Paul
says yes.

Week Four: January 22 nd – 28 th
Generosity
Philippians 4:19 ESV And my God will supply every need of yours according to
his riches in glory in Christ Jesus
This week it's all about you discovering how to be more generous. Generosity is a
way of life like praise, worship and breathing. Let's Go Deeper when it comes down
to generosity. Again, it begins in the beginning. When God gave mankind the earth,
he also gave clear instructions. Be fruitful and multiply. That command was in
response to what God gave. God gave the entire creation to us. Now! What does
that have to do with your generosity? We are simply responding to the first gift -
breath and the earth. Reciprocity, response, resuscitation are all acts of a live
human being living but also giving back. In other words, you are ___ is a gift from
God. Your response to the gift is you living for God by giving God your time, talent
and treasure. Then God gave us specific instructions on what to give. We are to be
generous with our time, talent, and treasure.
Time
Have you ever noticed how stingy people never have any time for you. They
are selfish with their time because they don’t want to feel vulnerable. They don’t
want the relationship to be that close that they have to give up the most valuable
thing that cannot be replaced – time. Once time is spent, it cannot be recovered.
When Jesus asked for some follower’s time, they all had excuses. Matthew 8:21-22
- 21 Another of His disciples requested, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
22But Jesus told him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” … God
saved you and he wants your irreplaceable commodity, and he will replace it with
eternity. Give him the time of your life and he will replace it with eternity with him.
Talent
God is so generous he gave everyone a talent. If you think your talents are
simply for you to make a lot of money, retire, and die, you’ve missed the point of
your life. God gave you talents to benefit others, not yourself. And God gave other
people talents that benefit you.
In the body of Christ, each part matters. There are no insignificant people in
the family of God. You are shaped to serve God, and he wants to see how you are
going to use the talents he gave you. Whether you’re a musician or an accountant, a
teacher or a cook, God gave you those abilities to serve others. The Bible tells us,
“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully
administering God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10 NIV).
You are a manager of the gifts God has given to you. They may be great or
small in your eyes, but they matter to God. “It is required that those who have been
given a trust must prove faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2 NIV). When God created you, he
Page | 4
made an investment in you, and he expects a return on that investment. Are you
using what he’s given you for the benefit of others to make the world a better place?
Or are you just using those talents to benefit yourself?
If God has given you a talent, he wants you to use it. It’s like a muscle. If you
use it, it will grow. If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it. If you have a talent but are afraid
to use it, or if you get lazy and don’t use it to benefit others, you’re going to lose it.
Like the parable of the ten talents in Luke 19, if you don’t use what God has given
you, he will take it away and give it to someone else who will. But if you use your
talents wisely, God will give you more. If you use your time wisely, God will give you
more time. If you use your energy wisely, God will give you more energy. If you use
your influence wisely, God will increase your influence. God will bless your level of
faithfulness. (adapted from Rick Warren)
Treasure
Now comes the tough part for many. Bishop how do I Go Deeper with giving
my treasure. I am convinced generosity is pervasive. The opposite is also true. If
you are stingy with your time and talent you will also be stingy with your treasure. If
you are generous in one area it will not stay behind the walls. Generosity will
breakthrough the walls of fear of being generous with your treasure.
You see generosity with your money has more to do with trust than you think.
We hold on to our money for fear we won't get any more to do with it what we want
to. It's indicative of how close or far you are to God. God told Israel he knew their
hearts had left him when he looked up and didn't see their tithe. Malachi 3:7 says
Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and
have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD Almighty.
“But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’ God said you are connected to me through
your heart. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21
God told Israel he loved them so much he gave them the opportunity to give.
Haggai 1:7-11 7This is what the LORD of Hosts says: Consider carefully your ways.
8Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house, so that I may take
pleasure in it and be glorified, says the LORD.9You expected much, but behold, it
amounted to little. And what you brought home, I blew away. Why? declares the
LORD of Hosts. Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with
his own house. 10Therefore, on account of you the heavens have withheld their dew
and the earth has withheld its crops. 11I have summoned a drought on the fields
and on the mountains, on the grain, new wine, and oil, and on whatever the ground
yields, on man and beast, and on all the labor of your hands.” God gave Israel the
freedom to spend their money the way they wanted. What they bought didn’t satisfy
them.
When we are given an opportunity to do what we want with what we have our
satisfaction never last long. What you have is a tool (money) to build the Kingdom
and a weapon to defeat the enemy. Your generosity with your treasure increases
your heavenly reward as well as builds the kingdom and defeats the enemy. But
store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not
destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal Matthew 6:20

Today’s Truth: Philippians 4:19 ESV And my God will supply every need of yours
according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus
Point to Ponder: Paul writes this thank you letter to the Philippians from a jail cell
chained to the Roman Praetorian guards. He had just received money on his books
and spoke with fervent faith. God supplied his needs and God will take care of ours.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to rely on you and not worry about my needs
being met.

Today’s Truth: Hebrews 13:16 ESV Do not neglect to do good and to share what
you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Point to Ponder: The writer of Hebrews told the church, which was under severe
persecution, still give sacrificially because it pleases God and he will meet their
needs.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to trust you even in difficult times and give.

Today’s Truth: Proverbs 11:24-25 ESV One gives freely yet grows all the richer;
another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings
blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.
Point to Ponder: The proverbial writer speaks the truth that whoever gives is
always a giver. They in fact will be watered with more. Whoever withholds will
suffer in their want.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to be a giver and not a taker.

Today’s Truth: Luke 6:38 For if you give, you will get! Your gift will return to you in
full and overflowing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for
more, and running over. Whatever measure you use to give—large or small—will be
used to measure what is given back to you.”
Point to Ponder: Luke is talking about the reciprocity and cyclical effect of giving. It
is with the same measure (amount) we give out is the same measure (amount) we
get back.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to use a big measuring cup in my generosity and
expect the same measure to come back my way.

Today’s Truth: Malachi 3:10 ESV / Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that
there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of
hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a
blessing until there is no more need.
Point to Ponder: Malachi repeats what was started long before the law was
established. Since tithe was started before the law, like many commandments, e.g.
not to murder, steal, etc., it cannot be constrained by the law since it was included in
the law. In other words, by virtue of the fact it preceded the law and was right to do
by command of God, doesn’t make it wrong because Moses included in the law and
we are now under grace. There is a blessing when we tithe. God dares us – “test
me” – so he can prove he will bless you.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to trust you to pour out blessings on me as I
tithe.

Today’s Truth: Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from
my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the
LORD Almighty. “But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’ Malachi 3:7
Point to Ponder: This text is directly connected to the previous. They go hand in
hand. This part of the text speaks to the love relationship between Israel and God.
The language of return speaks to being deserted. God says he has been deserted
because they stopped tithing. He knows they stopped loving because their treasure
(tithing) is found wherever their heart is.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to love you and never stop loving you by always
tithing to you to support your work in the earth.

Today’s Truth: 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 ESV The point is this: whoever sows sparingly
will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each
one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in
all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9
As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their
righteousness endures forever.
Point to Ponder: Your ROI (return on investment) is up to you. Paul said if you give
a lot you can expect to receive a lot. Paul also said what you receive is not an in-
kind return. In other words, Paul said you will receive a reward of righteousness.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to sow with all my heart!

Going Deeper – Maturity
1 Corinthians 14:20 ESV Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in
evil, but in your thinking be mature.
1 Corinthians 13:11 ESV When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a
child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.
Ephesians 4:14-15 So that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the
waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness
in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every
way into him who is the head, into Christ,
Hebrews 5:12-13 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need
someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need
milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of
righteousness, since he is a child.
2 Peter 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
Romans 5:3-4 More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering
produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces
hope,
Hebrews 6:1-3 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to
maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith
toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the
resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And this we will do if God permits.
Hebrews 5:12-14 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need
someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need
milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of
righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who
have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good
from evil.

Point to Ponder: As the writer says, the believers to whom he is writing have more
than enough time invested. They should be able to teach others by now, but instead
they are still spiritual infants. Why? Because they have been slow-moving and lazy
in their approach to the faith: "dull of hearing." Instead of teaching, they still need to
be taught, as if they were only new converts to the faith!
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me develop my level of intake of you. I want to

Point to Ponder: Hebrews 6:1–3 is the author's answer to the problem posed at the
end of chapter 5. The readers are spiritually immature, and so there is a good
chance they will miss the deeper meanings which the book of Hebrews means to
explore. Here, however, the author resolves not to waste time on elementary
teachings. Instead, he will press on and allow the audience to "catch up" as they are able.
Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to grow up in the word, in my prayer life, in my
disciplines so I can serve you better, know you better and represent you better in the
